We were the first publication to address the needs of the GIS user community, and we have enjoyed much success as the industry "found its footing" and expanded into a wide range of disciplines. We feel lucky to have served a dedicated readership for more than two decades. The content of each GeoWorld issue has been posted online at www.geoplace.com since 1996. This rich resource provides perspective on technology development and clear relevance to the challenges faced today. To highlight some of the informational resources available, each issue will feature archived stories relating to that issue's cover story. Simply click on "Articles & Archives" at the top of the menu bar on GeoPlace.com, and type in a few of the key words from the following list to find the full article on our site. November 2011 Just Let Go: Dublin, Ohio, Unlearns to Learn Web Mapping BY BRANDON B. BROWN Just L Go et By Brandon B. Brown Dublin, Ohio, UNLEARNS to LEARN Web Mapping August 2011 Buffalo Overlook: A Citywide GIS Tracks Public Works A Dublin, Ohio By Eric Brady 26 November 2010 Government GIS Can Overcome a Changing Economic Climate s ubiquitous, consumer-level mapping transformed the general public's BRADY literacy level, more BY ERIC geographic pressure than ever has been placed on public agencies to offer timely and accurate data as well as a user experience that easily and elegantly answers questions. And it has to be available on whatever device happens to be at the consumers' hand. The expectation is to find without looking, understand without learning and, all the while, be mildly entertained. To accommodate this more-demanding audience, geospatial professionals have to think differently, make compromises to some ideals and help customers "unlearn" some things they have been taught about GIS. It's a challenge that customers have issued and one the public GIS industry must answer. There certainly are business cases where a somewhat "traditional" Web GIS application is necessary, especially for internal uses. Customers must be able to get all the data at anytime, but there's growing demand for something different. Elegant and highly focused applications are becoming a standard to meet specific business cases. These applications may only do one thing, but they do it very fast and succinctly.
