June 2018 | Overdrive | 49 Custom Rigs T his scale model of a Mack dump is based on the favorite among the Macks owned by Kentucky coal hauler Cecil Spurlock during his long career. "BlackGold" was his name for this 1981 Mack DM 800. "He was a true Mack person," says his son, David Spurlock. Cecil Spurlock, of Man- chester, Kentucky, started his working life in 1957, when he was 17, as a coal miner with little more than "a pick and a shovel," says his son. Cecil eventually became a mine foreman, able to support his wife and seven children. He got into coal hauling in the mid-1970s. Cecil died in 2012. The model, David says, is a way to "keep dad with us, know- ing how much he loved" his work and family. The model was built by family friend Ricky West of Pike County, Kentucky. This 15-inch-long 1981 Mack DM 800 model has a working hoist to dump the coal and is built at 1/25th scale. The truck has tube-type tires, metal Mack bulldog mirrors, metal fender mirrors and a metal bulldog on the radiator. This country wasn't built on "good enough." Neither was Lincoln Chrome.
