UVX Universal Vinyl Extruders, Inc. 631-643-1786 www.uvxextruders.com NEW CONVENIENT PICK UP POINT IN MARYLAND Gate automation tech tips Don't take incoming voltage for granted BY SHAWN LALLI, CO-OWNER EAST COAST GATE OPERATORS, INC. (ECGOI) (Editor's note: Shawn Lalli, who has sold and manufactured gate oper- ators and controls all his professional life, has offered to submit regular tips on overcoming "real world" installa- tion issues and problems. This is the first installment in a planned regular series.) • • • In this month's edition I want to talk about incoming voltage for ac- cessories. This topic is important and not to be taken for granted; the gate operator manufacturers and accesso- ries manufacturers have come a long way to help you and themselves be multi-voltage, non-polarity friendly. Let's take a radio/receiver that is rated at 12-24 vac/vdc, as an example. This is great! For one, you don't have to worry about polarity sensitive (positive to positive, negative to nega- tive) and too wide a range of incoming voltage that most gate operators pro- duce. That said, you still need to verify that your gate operator's accessories power is putting out the range needed. Do not take it for granted; a lot of gate operator manufacturers are using 28+ volts, so to a receiver that is rated 24 volts, 28+ can be harmful to the coil. Let's talk about the coil, which is the mechanism that pulls the relay in. The coil is powered using incoming voltage built and spec'd by the man- ufacturer. The relay is rated typically 0 to 250 volts, meaning that is what can be run through the relay safely. In the photo at left, the coil is identified as well as the relay n/o n/c (which means the state the relay is in at rest before the action takes place). These small "workaholic" relays are sometimes taken for granted be- cause the manufacturers now give you many options inherently, whereas years ago you had to wire each relay command separately. I hope you find this information helpful. I am always available to an- swer questions or help solve installa- tion problems. Until next time, remember to keep the smoke inside the box and your gate operators will run smoothly To contact me, call 704-588-4399 or e-mail shawn@eastcoastgateop- eratorsinc.com.
