WORLD FENCE NEWS • JULY 2018 • 37 Callbacks – Every contractor's "thorn in the side" continued from page 35 Here is the general way it works. Each day the jobs that are finishing up are given to the driver of the vehicle assigned to the field duty. The truck is then loaded up with possible replacement needs such as additional pickets, PVC panels, what- ever. The driver is then on standby and when the needs arise for the replace- ment items the foreman calls into the office and the driver is instructed to proceed to the necessary jobsite to re- solve the problem. The customer sees the quick re- sponse, is truly impressed with the customer service, and then has no problem sending or giving the fore- man the final payment. As an extra added bonus you have now created a customer who is not only satisfied but who in most likeli- hood will be more than happy to refer you and your company. Hopefully you can adjust this thought for your business. Incidental- ly, the driver who would be on standby could also be your yardman to do jobs around the yard so that he's not get- ting paid for sitting around. One final thought: it's recently come to my attention by talking to a couple of guys that the "warranty card" that used to be filled out by the customer has fallen out of style and gone the way of the dinosaur. I gather that's correct. I don't know if it's in all parts of the country. I'd like to know, however, if that's the case, why? In my judgment, if a customer fills out a warranty card, while it doesn't cover your labor, does it not assure that the manufacturer has some stake in replacing the "defective" materials? I would be curious to find out if that's still the same with or without a war- ranty card. Well I hope the overview has sparked a thought or two to help your business reduce the callback possi- bility and speed up the final payment process. As always, these ideas or any oth- er that I present regarding other issues all will help you to realize that Profit Is Not A Dirty Word!™ World Fence News contribut- ing editor Jim Lucci is president of Management Motivational Associ- ates of Freeport, N.Y., and for many years has written a monthly column on business management and issues which affect fence company owners and managers.
