76 • JULY 2018 • WORLD FENCE NEWS John described a federal project that the company recently complet- ed in El Paso with the Union Pacific Railroad. The project consisted of 2,644 lineal feet of 8 foot tall expand- ed metal fence as well as 1,595 lineal feet of 12 foot high expanded metal. He shared with us that the Rob- inson family has been associated with the fence industry since 1968, start- ing with Ray Robinson, who after 10 years of various positions at another company, officially started Robinson Fence Company in 1978. After servicing multi-state ar- eas, the company opened a branch in Waxahatchie, Texas, which services Dallas/Fort Worth and surrounding areas in Texas. We asked what the biggest chal- lenge has been so far this year, and were told that the materials market has experienced drastic price hikes. Second, he said that vendors re- port they can't find enough truck driv- ers, and this impacts deliveries. The truck drivers apparently seem to be gravitating toward the oil fields. This has presented a challenge to say the least. We then asked what the biggest surprise was. John said it is the num- ber of schools being built in Texas – both new and replacements – to ac- commodate population growth. We asked about the state of the economy in the area, and John said it is doing very well. On the residential side, subdivi- sions and apartment complexes are going up, particularly in the Dallas-Ft. Worth rectangle. On the commercial side, con- struction of corporate offices and warehousing is strong. As for infrastructure, highway construction just finished where In- terstate 30 and Interstate 35 meet, and IH-35 from basically Waco to DFW is constantly being upgraded. We then asked what the com- pany strategy is for 2018, and were told, first and foremost, it is manag- ing growth and continuing to do what they do well. Fencer's Field Report continued from page 20 CLFMI accepting applications for 2018 Les Grube Memorial Design Award The Chain Link Fence Man- ufacturers Institute (CLFMI) an- nounces that applications are being accepted for the 2018 Les Grube Memorial Design Award competi- tion, which was established in 1984 and is named for CLFMI past presi- dent Les Grube. The award was cre- ated to highlight the versatility and functionality of chain link fencing products. CLFMI recognizes the design- ing architect and installing contrac- tor of the project that is deemed to represent the most unique and prac- tical way of incorporating chain link fencing materials. Over the years the award has been given to projects as diverse as the "living" façade of an airport facility to the design of a "slam dancing" night club in Tijuana.
