Scene at: Columbia Valley and Finger Lakes regions shine in 22nd annual competition n Nov. 6-7, the 2012 Grand Harvest Awards (GHA) wine competition was held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, Calif. After tasting through nearly 1,000 entries, judges for the annual competition awarded eight double-gold, 94 gold, 371 silver and 297 bronze medals. Established in 1990 by Vineyard & Winery Management, this terroir-focused competition evaluates wines grouped by appellation and varietal/category. With cross-regional competition removed, each wine is judged in the context of its viticultural region. Again, GHA puts on display the fact that grape varieties grown in the right terrior and climate can produce some outstanding wines, noted Bill Traverso, director of wine competitions for Vineyard & Winery Management. In the 2012 competition, Columbia Valley in Washington and New Yorks Finger Lakes region best exemplified this fact. Columbia Valley won the greatest number of gold medals (75), while the Finger Lakes earned the highest percentage (29%) of gold medals. 1 2 For complete results by company and region, visit www.winecompetitions.com. 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 Ann Miller is the marketing manager at St. James Winery in Missouri. 2 Joel Green is the general manager and winemaker at Safe Harbor Wines in Napa. 3 2012 4 Jeanne Burgess is the vice president and director of winemaking operations at Seavin Inc., in Florida. 5 Jamie Arevalo works in product development at E. & J.
