HEAD-TRAINED, CANE-PRUNED
Head-trained, spur-pruned vines
were popular historically, and now
this style is mostly limited to older
vineyards, although there has
been recent interest in replicating
this style in new plantings. Headtrained, spur-pruned vines require
minimal trellising, minimal shoot
positioning, and the lack of trellis
and wires can allow for cross cultivation of the field. Low-fertility
sites can perform well with this
type of system, which also has aesthetic benefits. However, shoots
can be crowded and shade fruit,
which also leads to challenges with
uniformity of sunlight and ripening,
and a lack of airflow in the canopy
that can present disease concerns.
Head training with cane pruning has become more popular in
Californias North Coast vineyards
in recent years. This is partly in
response to the issues of declining
