48 | Overdrive | August 2018 Custom Rigs T wo racers in the Minimizer Bandit Big Rig Series overcame hurdles in their way to pick up wins in July. Tennessee-based Mack technician "88 Mike" Morgan claimed his first win of the season July 7 at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pennsylvania, while Justin Ball earned his first-ever Bandit Series win July 14 at Salem Speedway in Salem, Indiana. At Lake Erie, Morgan and his Mack race truck started in fifth place. Mark Noble started the race on the pole position and by lap 10 had built a four- truck-length lead. By lap 18, Morgan had claimed the lead and held on for the win. For Ball, his Salem win on July 14 lifted a weight off his shoulders after finishing in the top five in 10 out of 12 races in 2017, along with two top-five finishes in three races this year. Ball started the race in eighth and quickly worked his way up into the top five. Marshall Davis, who started in second, had jumped out to an early lead and led the field by half a lap before a caution flag flew halfway through the race on lap 15. On the restart, Bandit Series points leader Ricky "Rude" Proffitt took the lead, and Ball grabbed second. After another caution on lap 21, the next restart saw Ball grab the lead from Proffitt and never look back. After additional races in July and August, the Bandit participants were scheduled for the final races of the season: Aug. 25 at Elko Speedway in Elko, Minn., and Sept. 15 at Anderson Speedway in Williamston, S.C.
