Also, 11 of the 12 members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team are playing (Jordan Spieth just missed out on quali cation), along with Team Europe's Rose, Francesco Molinari, McIlroy, John Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Paul Casey. As soon as the Tour Championship concludes Sunday, the Ryder Cup players will jet over to le Golf Na- tional near Paris, France for these biannual match- es, which are always must-watch-TV viewing. East Lake is a course many of the top players know well as the Tour Championship has been played there every year since 2004 and three times before then beginning in 1998. Coca Cola, based in Atlanta, is the presenting sponsor of the Tour Championship, so hence the Atlanta venue. The property known as East Lake was purchased in 1904 and the golf course, designed by Tom Ben- delow, opened July 4, 1908. In 1913, famed golf course architect Donald Ross redesigned the Ben- delow course at East Lake and then in 1994, Rees Jones restored Donald Ross' golf course layout. Over the years, the East Lake course has hosted many national and regional championships. The Southern Amateur was played at East Lake in 1907, 1910, 1915, 1922 and 1923; the Southern Open in 1919, 1920 and 1927; the Geor- gia State Amateur in 1924, 1930, 1934, 1941 and 1956; the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1950; the Ryder Cup in 1963; the Western Junior Amateur in 1997; the 101st United States Amateur in 2001; and The Tour Championship 13 times since 1998. In 2005, East Lake was named the permanent home to the Tour Championship. But East Lake is no longer just about golf. The club, spearheaded by local real estate developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, serves as the driving force behind the e ort to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood. All pro ts from the club, as well as charitable donations from the club's corporate membership, support the East Lake Foundation and its remarkable redevelopment project. The course provides an opportunity for its members and their guests to retrace Jones' foot- steps on a world-class course – and in the process serve as the economic base to support education, recreation, and other social programs for the com- munity. East Lake Golf Club stands as a symbol of tradi- tion and honor to those who know its history and were a part of its past. But, even more importantly, it stands as a symbol of hope to those who will live in its future. Click here to learn much more about the Tour Champion- ship, includ- ing ticket information.
