Also on track is the development of a Web-based interactive geographic information system (GIS) that allows users to evaluate their property for vineyard suitability and match it to suitable grape varieties. "Users will be able to review the climatic and physical attributes or liabilities of their site," said Wolf. "We'll be able to offer recommendations on which varieties could be grown at the property, based on length of growing season, summer heat, and low-temperature winter considerations." I've only skimmed the surface of available resources here. It's up to you to dig deeper to discover the program that best meets your needs. Vintners who do their homework and make use of the resources available have a leg up on avoiding the heartbreak, false starts and economic pitfalls that are all too frequently associated with the wine industry. Marguerite Thomas is a Baltimore- based journalist and photographer who contributes wine-related articles to several national and international publications. She is the author of the books "Wineries of the Eastern States" and "Visiting East Coast Wineries." Comments? Please e-mail us at feedback@vwmmedia.com.
