2013 Preview The East's largest wine industry trade show returns to Richmond March 12-14 he eastern wine industry will gather this month for the Wineries Unlimited Trade Show & Conference, hosted by Vineyard & Winery Management. Now in its 37th year, the event will be held March 12-14 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Va. The 2013 program will offer viticulture, enology and marketing sessions, led by leading researchers and industry experts, along with an extensive trade show. SESSION HIGHLIGHTS Dr. Keith Striegler, proprietor of Flint Ridge Winegrowing Services in Arkansas, and Dr. Bruce Zoecklein, enology professor emeritus at Virginia Tech, will moderate a three-day program of viticulture and enology sessions. Viticulture highlights will include a March 12 presentation by Dr. Annemiek Schilder of the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University, about "Optimizing Fungicide Applications While Reducing Adverse Effects on Vines and Wines." Another important topic, the yieldversus-quality debate, will be addressed in a March 13 session by Dr. Ed Hellman of Texas AgriLife Extension and Texas A&M University. Enology sessions will feature "Microbiology for the Small Winery," presented by Molly Kelly, extension enologist for Virginia Tech, and "Managing Malolactic Fermentation," presented by Michael Leonardelli, extension enologist for the University of Missouri. Elizabeth Slater, owner of In Short Direct Marketing, will moderate the marketing sessions, including a full-day "Winery DIY" workshop on March 12 that will focus on how wineries can create or refine their messaging. Danene Beedle of the Missouri Wine and Grape Board will lead a March 13 86 V I N E YARD & WINERY MANAGEMENT | Mar - Apr 2013 mid-morning session, "Let's Get Social," designed to help attendees keep up with social media. In addition to participating in sessions, Wineries Unlimited attendees are encouraged to visit the East's largest wine industry trade show, a showcase for must-have products and services. And because it takes a lot of beer to make great wine, nearly two dozen companies will also exhibit their brewing products and equipment at the show. SIP & SOCIALIZE Wineries Unlimited is as much about socializing and networking as it is about professional development and education. The March 12 afternoon welcome reception, "Tour de Vin," kicks off the conference with a tasting of wines from across the East and Midwest. Winery attendees are invited to bring a bottle of their own wine to share and enjoy with hors d'oeuvres. The Wine & Dine Gala on March 13 will include a wine reception, followed by a plated gourmet dinner and a live auction to benefit the ASEV/ ES Scholarship Program. The reception will feature the "Governor's Cup Case," the 12 highest-scoring wines from the 2012 Governor's Cup wine competition in Virginia.
