SOILCOHEN & CELLAR REMI representative result. If variability is in different sections of a block, and not interspersed throughout the block, consider sampling sections within a block separately, especially if you might harvest them separately (although you will need to know the acreage or vine count of the different sections). the block and sampling 10 vines per row. If the block is variable, yet with clearly defined weaker and stronger sections, you might need to subdivide it for sampling. If the variability is spread throughout the block, a higher percentage of the vines should be sampled to get a JMSWineDex20112.pdf 1 11/15/11 better representation. In all protocols, it is important to account for the unproductive or missing vines within a block. This can be taken into account during cluster counting by randomizing sampling, and using zero clusters for the unproductive or missing vines when calculating the average 3:48 PM cluster count. Another strategy is DO THE MATH An estimated yield per acre can be generated by multiplying the number of producing vines per acre, by an estimate of the average number of clusters per vine, by an estimate of the average cluster weight. Yield per block is determined by multiplying the number of clusters per vine, times the cluster weight at harvest, times the number of productive vines per block. • Powdery Mildew? JMS Stylet-Oil® Choice • Mites? For Powdery Mildew and Mite control, grape growers choice: have a JMS Stylet-Oil alternative to early-season sulfur treatment. C M Y CM MY CY CMY • Outperforms sulfur as an eradicant on powdery mildew - University researched and rated 10/10. • JMS Stylet-Oil is a stand-alone product for powdery mildew. • Eliminates early season inoculum growth that can cause late-season epidemics. • Unlike sulfur, JMS Stylet-Oil works well in cool weather, protects around the clock, and harmlessly degrades without potential air pollution. K Walking vineyard blocks regularly can give you an idea of cluster morphology compared to other years. Photo: Stockbyte For blocks of less than a few acres and with relative uniformity, I usually count the clusters on 40 vines. It's important to get a representative sample, which means that if the block is relatively uniform, you can sample randomly throughout the block, perhaps walking four different rows throughout 34 V I N E YARD & WINERY MANAGEMENT | Mar - Apr 2013 Apply this clean white oil early for mite control throughout the season.
