white Austrian grape, grüner veltliner. She thought grüner would be "interesting" and not unlike the track records of aromatic varieties. After three years of her prodding, Galen planted it. Finding grüner vines in 2003 wasn't easy, but the Troxells found them at Amberg Nursery in New York, and bottled their first vintage in 2008. As the only local producer with grüner vines, Galen had to learn by trial and error. They pulled some grapes and replanted to experiment with different clones and rootstocks. The trellising is VSP and Scott Henry, and all of the vineyards are drip irrigated. Galen Glen's grüner veltliner is a flagship for the winery. The couple brought in zweigelt as grüner veltliner's red playmate, and another nod to Galen's German heritage. But, the Troxells insist, despite the zweigelt and a stand-alone cabernet franc, that Galen Glen is a white-wine house.
