"He's a self-taught man and has a gift managing different people and matching them with the right job and crop." Roger Gamache, fourth generation Yakima Valley farmer, received the grape association's Industry Service Award. Gamache and his brother Bob went against conventional wisdom in the early 1980s to plant wine grapes at a time when Washington wines were largely unproven and unknown. At the urging of acclaimed winemaker Charlie Hoppes, who agreed to oversee winemaking operations, the brothers founded Gamache Vintners in 2002. The winery has a tasting room in the Prosser Vintner's Village. Gamache has a long history of industry involvement, from serving as past president of the grape association, president of the national Wine Grape Growers of America, member of the Wine Advisory Committee, steering committee member of the World Vinifera Conference held in Seattle in 1995 and 2000, and is chair of the Winegrape Growers of America.
