National Petroleum News (NPN) has been the independent voice of the petroleum industry since 1909 as the opposition to Rockefeller’s Standard Oil. So, motor fuels marketing and retail is not just a sideline for us, it’s our core competency.

RETAIL OPERATIONS Photo courtesy of Gilbarco. 1 APril 2013  The Wayne Nucleus POS system comes in two  configuration  choices,  a  Terminal  Server,  which  features  the  server  and  the  terminal  in  one  unit,  so  management  operations  can  be  done  on  the  sales floor. "It's an all-in-one model, where it's all  at  the  cashier's  station."  said  Chittenden.  "This  is  a  more  customer-facing  configuration,  where  the  customer  can  manage  their  price-book,  as  well  as  operate as a cash register. This keeps employees at  the front of the store, rather than have them disappear in the back." The  other  option  is  the  Nucleus  Server,  which  features a server separate from the POS terminal to  offer  the  ability  to  manage  the  site  from  the  back  office in addition to the sales floor.   Additionally,  for  retailers  who  might  not  recall  the  last  time  they  had  their  POS  systems  serviced, it might be time to schedule a maintenance appointment. "If a site hasn't been serviced in a while, it might  be a good opportunity to schedule a routine maintenance check-up," Chittenden advised. When  a  retailer  buys  a  Nucleus  POS  system,  it  is  covered  by  a  national  network  of  authorized  service providers.   "So retailers can contact these service organizations, and they can access the system and check on  any  internal  problems,"  he  said.  The  Nucleus  is  equipped with two hard drives. One hard drive acts  as the automatic back up for the other. It is good  for the hard drives to be checked and maintained  as they contain the critical business information for  the site. The easiest way is to contact a local Wayne  authorized service organization. "One  of  the  components  of  the  Nucleus  POS  system  is  UPS  batteries,  which  protect  against  power  failures,"  explained  Paul  Kern,  senior  software manager for Wayne. "But what happens over  three or four years, these batteries lose their ability  to  protect."  Thus,  in  the  event  of  an  unexpected  shutdown,  the  batteries  might  not  be  able  to  do  their job.  Along  these  lines,  Hervey  said  it's  important  to  look at a POS manufacturer's documents and follow  NPN Magazine  n  www.npnweb.com
