If you don't speak football, this means run in a proscribed pattern and try to catch the ball. After fumbling time and again—OK, missing the ball entirely— Close moved me to a different group where we ran shorter, simpler routes. Eventually I succeeded at not only catching the ball but in tucking it against my body to shield it from imaginary opponents. That probably didn't merit a touchdown dance. Whoops! Next I practiced blocking. Coach Norm Killian gave me the equivalent of a nonspeaking role, which I'll call "skinny lady posing as formidable linewoman while trying not to tip under the weight of her helmet and pads." Finally, I did turnarounds with the tight ends. Standing with our backs to the coach, we turned around just in time to catch the ball. That was the idea anyway. When I finally caught one after several fumbles, a teammate offered me her hand—probably for a high five. Instead, I grabbed her hand in an awkward handshake...with the wrong hand. While the drills were the most rigorous mentally, the conditioning exhausted me physically. We ran sprints, did burpees (a quick pushup and jump to standing), and bear-walked on all fours carrying a teammate on our backs. I repeat: SKINNY LADY ON ALL FOURS CARRYING A TEAMMATE ON HER BACK. After it was done, I fully appreciated the mighty and powerful women of Madison Blaze. Incredible athletes and exemplary ambassadors of their mission, they are a very warm and welcoming group—so much so that the team encircled me in their huddle at the end, and Close let me keep my jersey. I left with a season pass, and plans to take my boys to see pro women's football right here in Madison. My son asked me if I could teach him to play football. I told him I couldn't, but now I know some ladies who can.
