The AED Foundation attended the SkillsUSA Championship in Kansas City on June 25-27, 2013. This event showcases career and technical education students from all over the U.S. The Championship is the national level competition for public high school and college/postsecondary technical students enrolled in career and technical education programs. Each SkillsUSA Championship student is a state level gold medalist. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from more than 1,100 national corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event. More than 5,900 students competed in 98 hands-on skills contests (including Diesel Equipment Technology) as well as leadership contests. Students competing in the Diesel Equipment Technology category went through a series of challenges including engine diagnostics, job interviewing skills and hydraulic systems. Mike Rowe from "Dirty Jobs" participated throughout the event, discussing with SkillsUSA MRW Foundation scholarship recipients how they can challenge the belief that an expensive four-year education is the best path for everyone. His goal is to confront the outdated stereotypes that continue to drive kids and parents away from a whole list of worthwhile careers. Rowe explained how many of the best opportunities that exist today require a skill, not a diploma.
