Walking the Political Balance Beam The wise B.C. political party tries to downplay tawdry capitalism-related topics like making money from natural resources when it's petitioning the people to let it form a government. That's because many voters are tree-hugging back-to-the-landers who don't want to hear about projects that may disrupt the landscape, even if only for a little while. As with most such steadfast positions, there's a blatant contradiction: While development is a bad word to many B.C. residents, they still want to keep the economy humming along and the job inventory building. B.C. Liberal Leader Christy Clark confounded the pollsters and pundits on Election Day May 14 by returning to power with a resounding 50-seat majority. The only downside was that Clark, a former talk show host with the gift of the gab, lost her own seat in the process. That little inconvenience was rectified July 10 with a convincing by-election win by Clark in the riding of Prince Rupert, a mere 21 square miles, is located on the northwestern shore of Kaien Island, just north of the mouth of the Skeena River.
