BATTERIES: HEAVY DUTY BATTERY PRODUCT SHOWCASE East Penn/Duracell From highway driving to construction jobsite, Duracell AGM batteries are specially designed to easily handle winches, auxiliary lights, GPS systems, laptops and anything else that plugs in or turns on. Absorbed Glass Mat Technology (AGM) has no free-flowing acid, making the battery suitable for extreme applications like fully loaded trucks or off-road equipped vehicles. www.driveduracell.com; (877) 344-8971. EnerSys/Odyssey Performance Series ODYSSEY Performance Series line of batteries are designed specifically for prosumer applications that don't require more cold cranking amps (CCA) and reserve capacity (RC) minutes as the OE batteries yet need greater deep-cycling capabilities to handle parasitic loads such as mobile electronics. Rugged construction and Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) construction delivers high performance and long life with pricing tailored toward cost savings. www.odysseybattery.com; (800) 964-2837. Interstate Mega-Tron Plus Get long life and premium performance in any cold to moderate climate with Interstate Batteries` Mega-Tron Plus 48/H6. This is an excellent replacement battery for heavy-duty pickups. With 30-month free replacement and six-year performance, this 730 CCA will meet or exceed the vehicle`s starting and operating requirements on and off the road. www.interstatebatteries.com; (800) 541-8419. Trojan SCS225 With more than 80 years of experience, Trojan Battery Company is the world's leading manufacturer of deep cycle battery technology. Trojan's proprietary Maxguard Advanced Design Separator and exclusive Alpha Plus paste formulation team up to increase battery life, extend run time and decrease maintenance. Ideal for heavyduty pickups, RV and marine applications. www.trojanbattery.com; (800) 423-6569. BATTERY TYPES Batteries come in three types suitable for work truck use. The first and oldest design is the flooded-cell, full-maintenance type. These have removable caps that allow you to check the electrolyte level in each cell and replenish it as necessary by adding distilled water. This antiquated design remains popular because it continues to provide more amp capacity per pound and per dollar than other lead-acid battery types. The chief downside to these flooded, Optima Yellow Top The Optima YELLOWTOP highperformance AGM battery features exclusive SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY design making it among the most advanced commercially available lead-acid battery technologies out there. With premium cranking power and impressive cycling capability, it's perfect for modern accessory-loaded pickups. The YELLOWTOP can repeatedly be brought back from deep power drains to full charge, so it can power plenty of electronics and still start you up time after time. Low internal resistance also provides more consistent power output and faster recharges. Trucks with winches, vehicles with high-demand electronics and audio systems, commercial vehicles and heavy equipment can all rely on this battery to provide ultimate starting and deep-cycle power. www.optimabatteries.com; (888) 867-8462. EnerSys/Odyssey Extreme Series ODYSSEY Extreme Series AGM batteries are designed for emergency response vehicles, light trucks and heavy-duty/commercial fleets. The pulse-hot cranking amps (PHCA), cold cranking amps (CCA) and reserve capacity (RC) ratings are substantially higher than those of conventional automotive batteries. TPPL technology enables the batteries to provide reliable starting, lighting and ignition (SLI), as well as deep cycling for parasitic loads. Their welded intercell connections enable them to withstand extreme vibration, and the AGM design allows them to be installed in any position except inverted. ODYSSEY Extreme Series batteries have a 3- to 10-year service life and storage of up to two years without recharging. www.odysseybattery.com; (800) 964-2837. full-maintenance models is that they must be checked and serviced regularly, including cleaning their tops and posts as necessary to prevent a buildup of crud heavy enough to leak voltage between their positive and negative posts. Flooded, maintenance-free batteries also have flooded cells with vented caps but the caps are not removable. These batteries are designed to provide a lifetime of normal use without needing additional water. The third type is the maintenance-free, absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery. The cell plates in these batteries are separated by layers of tightly packed fiberglass material that absorbs all the electrolyte. There is no free liquid in the cells and an AGM battery won't leak even if its case is punctured. No maintenance is necessary or possible on AGMs, other than a seasonal post and top cleaning if required. (The cells are sealed and must maintain a slight amount of positive internal pressure to function.) AGMs have low internal resistance that propickupmag.com PROPICKUP 7 ProPickup_2013BB_Batteries.indd 7 8/6/13 9:30 AM
