www.goodfruit.com GOOD FRUIT GROWER MAY 1, 2014 7 Jennifer Witherbee, the foundation executive director, said the new program was initiated by CWU. "The idea came to CWU when they were reaching out to alumni and the tree fruit industry for support. That's when they learned about WAEF and what we do," she said, adding that Dalton Thomas of Oneonta Trading Corporation was instrumental in encouraging CWU to team up with the tree fruit industry's foundation. "CWU is the first university that's teamed up with the Apple Foundation," Witherbee said. "It's also the first outside, nonprofit foundation that CWU has developed a tuition program with." The tuition program will help WAEF scholarship donors and students better lever- age awards for a greater impact and strengthens CWU's relationship with the tree fruit industry, said Scott Wade, CWU's advancement executive director in a news release. Among the first students to receive a CWU tuition waiver was Cecilia Moreno, a 2012 graduate from Cowiche's Highland High School who also received her initial WAEF scholarship. Moreno is taking courses at CWU in public health. WAEF will send out letters this spring informing students of their CWU tuition waivers.
