In total, 51 students each have received a $1,000 tools scholar- ship, for a total of $51,000 awarded in 2014. Scholarship winners are general or manu- facturer college equipment program students who earned the highest cumulative grade point average at the end of the fall 2013 semester. AED and The AED Foundation express their sincere thanks to Mike Rowe and the people at The mikeroweWORKS Foundation for everything they are doing on behalf of the construction industry, including these tools scholarships. Some of the scholarship recipients have been featured on Mike Rowe's website: www.profoundlydisconnected.com. Take a moment to visit the site and watch the videos that students have shared. These student stories speak to what AED Accreditation, a "community-based school-to-work" program, is all about. The website details the many initiatives that MRW is involved in to promote rewarding careers and technical occupations. MRW is not just talking about the skills gap; they are doing something about it. Creating awareness and disseminating information is important, but MRW has real programs to help students explore career possibilities and assist them in attaining their goals. The other message from MRW is that industry people and companies need to be directly involved in creating awareness and interest in career and technical occupations including construction equipment technology. To learn more about The AED Foundation's approach to narrowing the skills gap contact Steve Johnson, (630) 468-5134, sjohnson@aednet.org. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation Awards Tool Scholarships Students with best GPAs at AED-accredited tech programs get a nice surprise. The Inspiring Story of Will Coleman Will Coleman has had a difficult road to becoming one of the 51 recipients of the mikeroweWORKS $1,000 tool scholarships. Coleman lost his parents at 17, but didn't let it keep him from his dream of becoming a service technician. He is enrolled in the Caterpillar ThinkBig program at Florence- Darlington Technical College and works at Gregory Poole Equipment Company Melbane, N.C. branch. Find his story at http://profoundlydisconnected.com/will-coleman/ Will Coleman Mike Rowe Thank you to all the 2014 The AED Foundation Annual Fund Campaign investors.
