"It does seem that inevitably, one day, it's all going to fall," said Bailly. "The big change from the (Minne- sota) legislature that looks like it's going to pass this year – and I think it's a win-win – is a law permitting brewpubs to sell pints on-sale and growlers off-sale on Sunday (a day on which retail beer sales have been prohibited)." Minnesotans have been known to drive to Wisconsin to buy beer on Sundays. "Why not give that boon to the small brewpubs that are around," Bailly said. "That'll be a great thing. You wouldn't recognize northeast Minneapolis for all the brewpubs that are around. That they can now sell a pint of beer at the brewpub is really amazing. It changes the whole social scene. Unfortunately, the legislature stopped there and said, 'You can sell beer, but you can't sell food.' So again, that's a boon for the food trucks that camp out at the brewpubs." While some progress is being made regarding wine sales at farm- ers markets, it seems that most wineries are excluded by narrowly tailored rules that allow some, but not all, to benefit. Time will tell whether the apparent progress that is being made on the farmers mar- ket front is really going to pay off for the wine industry at large. Tim Teichgraeber cut his teeth in retail wine sales before becom- ing the wine columnist for the Min- neapolis Star Tribune. Today he is a contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle, Tasting Panel, Opus Vino and other publications, when he's not working as an entertainment lawyer in San Francisco. Comments?
