STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS T he big news for Phoenix-based Swift Transportation in the past year was the acquisi- tion of Central Refrigerated Services (last year's CCJ Top 250, No. 54), the fifth-largest temperature-controlled truckload provider with more than $500 million in revenue. Swift Chief Executive Officer Jerry Moyes also was the principal owner of privately-held Central. The $225 million deal was expected to make Swift the second-largest refrigerated carrier in the United States. Refrigerated transport is less cyclical than general freight or intermodal, Swift officials noted when the deal was an- nounced. "We believe the opportunity in this market is great, given the increase in demand and growth by the shippers and the lack of large quality carriers to meet these growing needs," said Richard Stocking, Swift president and chief operating officer, during a conference call. Moyes emphasized in another analyst call that Swift doesn't just have great relationships with customers: The company has "strategic partnerships." "Our value proposition is centered around our ability to handle customers' total transportation solutions," Moyes said. "We believe our customers probably have one organi- zation that they can turn to, to handle their over-the-road refrigerated, dedicated, intermodal and logistics services.
