The agency first announced its intention to pursue the rule in April, when it published a study saying the $750,000 minimum is too low and needs to be increased to account for inflation and higher medical costs. THE SAFETY FITNESS DETERMINATION rule's projected publication date was delayed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration from Dec. 17 to Feb. 10, 2015. The rule has been in the works since 2007 and would create a carrier scoring system the agency would use to target carriers deemed unsafe. It would permit FMCSA to use a data set similar to that used in its Compliance, Safety, Accountability program's Safety Measurement System rankings. A RULEMAKING for improving standards for rear impact or underride guards was begun by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Responding to a Truck Safety Coalition petition, NHTSA said it would issue an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for rear impact guards for single unit trucks and a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking concerning the guards on trailers and semitrailers. IDLE FREE, a Madison, Wis.-based APU manufacturer, was acquired by Phillips & Tempro Industries, an Eden Prairie, Minn.-based investor in companies that provide cooling products serving the heavy-duty truck industry, among others.
