New novel from truck stop operator Next time you visit Shoemak- er's Truck Stop in Lincoln, Neb., put a shoutout to Karen Gettert Shoemaker, co-owner and -op- erator with her husband. She's also the author of a new novel, "The Meaning of Names," that explores the reality that confronted U.S. German-Ameri- can communities – in this case, Nebraska – following World War I's outbreak. Reviewer Erin-Seaward-Hiatt called Shoemaker's book "delightfully rich … historical fiction of the Plains and a tapestry of human emotion." Shoemaker also published "Night Sounds and Other Stories" in 2002. She also serves as a mentor with the University of Nebraska's Creative Writing program.
