13 AGGREGATES MANAGER December 2014 AGGMAN OF THE YEAR 2014 Rick is passionate about the long-term success of AGG1, eager to help — no matter what the task. He is open to ideas and for- ward thinking, but, most importantly, knows how to bring out the best in everyone. The ongoing success and growth of AGG1 is a testament to Rick's hard work and dedication." While he's enjoyed the opportunity to help grow the future of educational programs within NSSGA, Feltes says he plans to retire after the 2016 AGG1 event in Nashville. "The highlight for me has been the people and the wonderful relationships you get to develop with people who make up this industry," Feltes says. "It's been a wonderful experience for me, growing up in a small family business and working between guys like Steve Zelnak and Don James. I was honored and privileged to be selected for that role and to represent the industry. I'm quite humbled by that." Between now and Nashville, Feltes will continue to make sure his goals, his committee, and his association are prepared for current and future needs, including those new producers on the edge of their own tipping point when it comes to becoming educated and involved. "I think there's always going to be a need and an interest to see how other operators do things that we do day to day," he says. "Our most important asset is our employees. What better way to get a return on investment than educating an employee? Without good employees, you're going to just die on the vine." Education will continue to be a driving demand in the ag- gregates industry as product demand continues to build and company ranks need to be replenished. At the same time, the skills needed in the future could be very different than those of long-time employees. "Look what's happening with loaders being operated from a remote location. Quarry trucks are also being operated that way," Feltes explains. "No one could have imagined the things we are doing today just five or 10 years ago. What is going to happen between now and the next generation? The sky is the limit. Anything is possible." AM Feltes was elected as chairman of the board of NSSGA in 2005 and represented the association through the 2006 annual convention.
