Z INSTRUCTION WHAT THE PRO'S DO LASER ACCURACY Technology is great... but are you using it to maximize your scoring potential? BY MARTIN CHUCK Using a laser can be tricky, but I can't live without my laser rangefinder! Most golfers simply aim the laser at the pin, but I use it for a lot more than that. On many occasions, I'll measure targets off the tee to select the right club to match the hole's design elements. The crafty designers generally provide a wide part of the fairway and my laser helps me select the right club to find that "honey" spot. I don't always pull the driver on par 4's and 5's! When I'm targeting flags, I first point my laser at the carry number, then the pin. As an example, the carry number might be "to the lip" of a front bunker. Since this feature 22 GOLF INFUZION MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2011 is large and reliable, I know if my bunker edge is 145 yards and I get a number of 195 yards for the pin, I missed the pin and should reshoot the pin to confirm the yardage. If there is a feature at the back edge of the green, I will shoot that number too. If I'm waiting in the fairway and there are people on the green standing on points of interest, I'll "heat" them up with the laser so I can get a better feel for the real shape of my target. All these points of data give me greater confidence to "pull the trigger" and hit the shot. Martin Chuck is a Senior Instruction Writer for Golf Infuzion Magazine.
