said Bob Betz of Betz Family Winery in Woodinville, Wash. "As a wine lover first and foremost, I find it very exciting." Betz, who celebrated his 40th vintage in Washington in 2014, attributed this to the many advancements that have taken place in the vineyard and winery during this time. Just what viticultural and enological changes have taken place over the last 40 years? Below – in honor of the 40th anniversary of Vineyard & Winery Management magazine – we list the top 40 advances and innovations as seen through the eyes of 34 of the country's leading winegrow- ers, winemakers, suppliers, laboratory technicians and aca- demicians – many of whom lived through each of these changes. In creating this list, we asked about innovations both large and small that significantly advanced the indus- try and ultimately improved wine quality.
