said Bob Betz of Betz Family Winery in Woodinville,
Wash. "As a wine lover first and foremost, I find it
very exciting." Betz, who celebrated his 40th vintage
in Washington in 2014, attributed this to the many
advancements that have taken place in the vineyard
and winery during this time.
Just what viticultural and enological changes have taken
place over the last 40 years? Below – in honor of the 40th
anniversary of Vineyard & Winery Management magazine
– we list the top 40 advances and innovations as seen
through the eyes of 34 of the country's leading winegrow-
ers, winemakers, suppliers, laboratory technicians and aca-
demicians – many of whom lived through each of these
changes. In creating this list, we asked about innovations
both large and small that significantly advanced the indus-
try and ultimately improved wine quality. Here is what we
found, starting in the vineyard and moving through pro-
cessing, production and finally to the glass.
