Golf Courses will not find better quality sand in the Okanagan than that offered by Salmon Valley. Sand and Gravel. Centrally located in the North Okanagan 23km North of Vernon BC on Salmon River Road just minutes off Hwy 97N this new business independently owned and operated by Ross and Cynthia Munsey officially opened in the summer of 2011. Puddicombe Golf is well known for their vast experience in all facets of golf course development and operations. What may not be as well known is that the company is really a family affair with patriarch Sid Puddicombe being joined by sons Grant, Mark and Tod. The Kwantlen Polytechnic University School of Horticulture is located at the Langley Campus, in Langley, BC. FROM L TO R: SID, GRANT, MARK & TOD Recalls Grant, "Sid has been in the business since 1947 so he's golfed a few more rounds than the rest of us. Still he didn't have to twist any arms to have us join him in the business. We grew up on golf courses." SALMON VALLEY'S LOW SODIUM SAND Says Ross, "We proudly are offering washed topdressing and 3mm sand as well as sand for new golf course construction." Their sand meets all the check marks. Chemical analyses by Brookside Laboratories Inc. (U.S.G.A. ( A2LA) accredited lab) indicate that not only does it meet all USGA requirements but it is also very low in sodium... so salt contamination is not an issue and will not restrict seed and sod establishment. Product analyses are available upon request. Each son has found a focus and area of expertise. Grant is Managing Director of the family company and also Managing Partner of the Puddicombe designed RedTail Landing GC. Brother Mark is Manager, Construction Services with expertise in construction management, supervision and course shaping. Tod is Projects Co-Ordinator and responsible for developing and implementing the programs for Puddicombe Golf clients. Sid is proud of the family's accomplishments, "We've been in business since 1981 and each of us specializes in a different aspect of the golf business. Golf is our passion, from consulting and business plans to design and construction. And we still occasionally have time for a round of golf." Still it is for their course design that the Edmonton based company is best known and Sid has some very strong ideas of what matters, "The objective of Puddicombe Golf has always been to create an interesting test of golf where your players will remember each and every hole, use every club in their bag and willingly return. It is important to create a smooth flow of play and not discourage the recreational players with unreasonable tests on their abilities." SALMON VALLEY'S LOCATION 23KM NORTH OF VERNON "We are currently supplying courses in Vernon and Kamloops, Salmon Valley Sand & Gravel look forward to becoming your long term supplier of quality sand," concludes Munsey. Says Jason Rasmuson, Project Coordinator for the recently opened Coal Creek, "Working with the Puddicombes on the Coal Creek Project has been a terrific experience. Their advantage of in-house design & architecture allow for an easier transition to the construction phase, where an outstanding staff use their expertise to create an exceptional golf landscape." Understanding community interest and personal preference, the limitations of site (soil, micro- climate, …) and the requirements and characteristics of plants all contribute to the sustainable, successful practice of horticulture including turf management. Kwantlen's turf management program combines an excellent foundation in horticulture with the core knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined in the national occupational standard for golf course superintendents. Students combine learning and doing at the start of their programs and critically apply knowledge to practice as their programs develop. Our programs prepare students for jobs. The success of our graduates demonstrates the value of a Kwantlen horticulture program to a successful career. The contribution of our students and graduates to community and industry enriches our lives. Kwantlen offers a 2 year diploma in turf management (or landscape design or production horticulture) and 4 year bachelor degrees in plant health and urban ecosystems. Diploma graduates may opt to continue their education with a horticulture degree or a degree in Business Administration from Kwantlen. Primary Contact: ...........
