36 City Trees Fire tree, also known as African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) is a large, upright tree with glossy deep green leaves and beauti - ful orange-scarlet flowers. It grows up to 25 m (80 feet). This tree comes from the rainforests of equatorial Africa and does prefer moist soil, though it can tolerate some salt. It needs good structural pruning. Native to Madagascar, royal poinciana (Delonix regia) is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful flowering trees in the world. The tree´s vivid flowers, ranging from red to yellow to orange, are strik - ing against the backdrop of bright green foliage. It can grow up to 12 m (39 feet) in height. Its native habitat is tropical and subtropical, but it can tolerate drought, salty conditions, and high pollu - tion, making it an excellent urban tree.
