After thorough testing the respective official agencies concluded that the AM 5200 meets their requirements on accuracy, stability, and integrity. As a result, it has been approved for determination of moisture in various grain types in commer- cial trading. The Perten Instruments Group, represented in over 100 countries, provides tools for quality control and process moni- toring. These tools include cutting edge diode array based technology, near-infrared analyzers, high frequency moisture analyzers, the Rapid Visco analyzer, laboratory mills, single kernel analyzers, and falling number systems. Worldwide PMI's new device Tobacco giant Philip Morris has received a US patent for an e-cigarette which can heat actual tobacco and can be connected to a PC or phone via a USB plug, and possibly through WiFi. This new e-cigarette would include a puff-detecting sensor, which can track every inhalation. The USB connection would provide access to the internet, allowing users to record and upload information on their smoking behavior, which could prove to be useful in clinical trials or in helping with smoking cessation. The device could also connect users trying to quit smoking to approved support groups on the Internet. In its patent submission, Philip Morris also said that an accompanying mobile app could monitor when a user is about to run out of nicotine products and pre-order them automatically. Other possibilities could include a pay-as- you smoke functionality where the user buys daily, weekly, or monthly smoking time or get smoking time credits based on smoking-related items bought through the app. UK New Kaymich flavors C.B. Kaymich & Co. Ltd., a pioneer in the area of online flavor application systems for the tobacco industry, has announced updates to its existing range of products. The company currently boasts three main solutions: the Gemini Baby, the Gemini, and the Bulk Melt System. The Gemini delivers versatility, accuracy, reliability, and accountability to its users and is therefore the ideal solution for the majority of applications. It offers seven different types of applicators, including cigarette maker, filter maker, and foil re-wind unit. This is of particular benefit to manufacturers who change the type of applicator used, depending upon what brand they are producing. The Gemini Baby unit is an entry level solution suitable for applying flavors in solution only. Available options for applying this type of flavor are currently either into the tow on the filter (Kaymich patented design) or into the tobacco on the garniture. The Bulk Melt unit is designed for the off-line melting of a large quantity of flavor, for example such solids as menthol crystals. It may be configured for either 'Quick Melt' or 'Slow Melt' depending upon either the quantity of material or the production requirements at the time. "...the goal of the Tobacco Act was not to save lives, but to gain a political vic- tory for the anti-smoking groups. The goal was to put a feather in the cap of the anti-smoking groups' national leaders, rather than to establish a ra- tional, science-based policy designed to reduce cigarette smoking, make cigarettes safer, and promote the pub- lic's health." - Dr. Michael Siegel, professor in the Depart- ment of Community Health Sciences, Boston University School of Public Health
