AGGREGATES MANAGER September 2015 14 by Kerry Clines, Contributing Editor P ottsville Quarry is Rogers Group, Inc.'s largest producing plant in southern middle Tennessee, but it hasn't always been so. The quarry was just a glimmer in the eye of company exec- utives when the greenfield site was purchased in the mid-1980s. "We brought in a portable plant, set it up, and crushed for a year or two," says Bryan Wolaver, plant manager. "Then, the location was shut down for five or more years due to a lack of business. When the quarry started back up, we ran a portable plant and a stationary plant until 2007." Business was really good in 2007, mostly due to the construction of State Highway 840 that encircles the city of Nashville, located about an hour's drive north of Pottsville. The quarry was running 24 hours a day/six days a week. It was decided that a plant upgrade was needed to keep up with demand and improve produc- tion, so the quarry was shut down the winter of 2007-2008. By the time the upgrade was com- plete, the economy had gone downhill, and Rog- ers Group began to question the money spent on the upgrade, as well as the quarry itself. Business has begun to pick back up, howev- er. "Last year was the first year since I took over the plant in July 2008 that it has run consis- tently all year long," Wolaver says. "We've had enough business to keep it going. We also built an asphalt plant on site last fall, and started op- erating it in October."
