In the request, NSRMCA requests that mail-carrying commercial vehicle drivers may choose to drive no more than 10 hours following eight consecutive hours off duty and not drive after having been on duty for 15 hours following eight consec- utive hours off duty. The exemption request states that the majority of NSRMCA's member carriers and drivers work in "split-shift" operations. The routes involve carrying mail from a central processing facility to U.S. Post Offices in the morn- ing, and in the afternoon, mail collected by these same U.S. Post Offices is picked up and delivered to a USPS processing facility. "A typical driver will have worked eight hours, with a nine-hour break during the day between outbound and inbound routes, and a seven-hour over- night break," according to the request. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was seeking public comment on the request during a 30-day period following its Aug. 20 publication in the Federal Register. Comments can be made at regulations. gov by searching Docket No. FMCSA-2015-0262. – Matt Cole Mail carriers group requests hours exemption HAZARDOUS MATERIALS haulers can count their on-duty attendance toward the required 30-minute break as long as they perform no other on-duty activities during that time. The exemption, requested by the American Trucking Associations, will apply to carriers that trans- port certain hazmat loads that require security plans, which normally require a driver when the truck is stopped to "attend" the cargo, normally an on-duty activity. The exemption is effec- tive through Aug. 21, 2017.
