The D60x90 S3 directional drill got a 17-horsepower boost to 202 horsepower from the previous machine, changing from a 6.8-liter John Deere engine to a Tier 4 Final 7.1-liter Cat. With 60,000 pounds of thrust/pull- back and 9,000 foot-pounds of rotational torque, the D60x90 S3 can install long shots of large fi ber bundles; gas distribu- tion lines, smaller diameter pipeline crossings and water lines. The machine will be available starting in December. Controls include the DigiTrak Aurora full-color touch-screen display, which offers real-time locate information along with on-rig bore planning capabilities that will be part of the InSite suite of fleet management and productivity tools, available in early 2016. The 242,100-pound thrust/pullback D220x300 S3 has a maximum carriage speed of 120 feet per minute and a maximum ground drive of 2.4 mph. On-demand fans, which run only when needed, have helped reduce the machine's sound level to 85 decibels at the operator's ear. Powered by a 415-horsepower Cat C13 Tier 4 Final engine, the D220x300 S3 has a 350-gpm drilling fl uid system. Users can use the optional on-board mud pump, a benefi t in confi ned spaces, or choose to remove it and instead run a dedicated mud pump. KOHLER EFI ENGINES BOOST FUEL ECONOMY 25 PERCENT Kohler introduced three new engines featuring its electronic fuel injection (EFI) technology: the Confi dant EFI, Command PRO EFI CH440 and Command PRO EFI 999cc. Like its other EFI engines, Kohler says the new models deliver a fuel economy boost of about 25 percent over their predecessors. The new engines employ Kohler's closed-loop system, which uses an oxygen sensor in the muffl er to continuously monitor the air/fuel mixture. If the mixture strays from the ideal level, the sensor triggers adjustments to the amount of fuel injected into the system. Kohler says the new engines improve power reliability over their predecessors as well, adding that because the system replaces a carburetor, issues related to that component are eliminated, including residue buildup caused by using ethanol-gasoline. The Confi dant EFI lineup will consist of four engines ranging between 20 and 27 horsepower.
