With individual tires going for as much as $30,000, they take tires seriously. Michelin's Earthmover divi- sion not only puts the rubber on some of the world's biggest trucks, but also backs it up with what it calls the MEMS Evolu- tion3 (Michelin Earthmover Management System). Used on more than 1,400 rigid-frame dump trucks around the world, MEMS uses the latest generation of tire pressure monitoring systems tied to software that sends tire-related data and alerts to operators and fl eet personnel. The infl ation monitor looks at both tire pressure limits and ambient temperatures. When tire temperatures become criti- cal, operators are warned im- mediately so they can change speeds, loads or haul routes. The alerts can also help fl eet managers know when mainte- nance schedules may change. The MEMS Evolution3 system uses liquid-proof sensors that report data throughout the tire's service life. Connection and data transfer can be ac- complished via Ethernet or 3G with the information stored in the cloud. Multi-channel, real time alerts are sent online, or by email or SMS. Two sensor mod- ules are available: conventional sensors and sensors for liquid-fi lled tires that are isolated in a capsule fi lled with inert liquid. The system is available for rigid dump trucks with tire diameters of 49 inches or greater and up to 12 tires per vehicle. Michelin XDR2 and XDR250 tires are pre-equipped for MEMS Evolution3 with a factory- integrated patch.
