Groundwater Monitoring Network Sees Increase in 2016 Funding In the omnibus appropriations bill which funds the govern- ment though September 30, 2016, the National Ground Water Association was pleased to see an increase given in National Ground-Water Monitoring Network funding for FY2016. The network will receive $3.6 million to continue imple- mentation of the program, an increase of $1 million over FY2015 levels. NGWA played a leading role in pursuing an increase in funding for FY2016 before Congress. The increase in funding will allow for additional imple- mentation of the National Ground-Water Monitoring Network across the United States. The program assembles water level and eventually water quality data from state agencies across the country onto a publicly accessible web portal—allowing for greater awareness and management of groundwater resources located at http://cida.usgs.gov/ngwmn. White House Launches Major Water Initiative, Will Host Water Summit T he Obama administration announced a major new initia- tive on December 15, 2015 designed to influence major challenges facing constrained water resources. By encouraging innovation to promote water efficiency and water reuse, the White House hopes to stimulate the development of technologies to ensure safe water supplies and better management activities. In addition, Department of Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced cre- ation of a Natural Resource Investment Center—designed to coordinate research on water resources, conservation, and water rights manage- ment. The White House will host a Water Summit on March 22 to further stimu- late interest and action around water management challenges. In preparation for the Water Summit, the White House is soliciting input (www.whitehouse.gov/ webform/shareyour-input-activities-and- actions-build- sustainable-water-future) from citizens, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector on specific, measurable steps you or your organization may be taking to address water challenges. The White House is putting high-pro- file attention and resources behind an effort to stimulate private sector interest in water research and technology. In ad- dition, the solicitation of input into the Water Summit provides an opportunity to highlight the great work NGWA and its members have been undertaking on these topics for years. The challenge facing the initiative is its timing—the last year of the Obama administration. It remains to be seen if the initiative will be established enough to continue be- yond 2016.
