CLEAR Communication The key to success in both personal and professional life is successful and effective communications. In an informal survey of CEOs and senior executives of a diverse group of organizations, 87 percent of respondents stated that improving communications is of critical importance. How do we get there? In this issue we will take on Clear and future issues will take on others. C.H.A.R.T. = = Good Communication Clear + Honest + Appreciative + Relevant + Timely M any organizations cra mission, vision and value statements to communicate both external and internal goals and expectations. Unfortunately, many of these organizations fail the clarity test. Vision statements are notorious for their seeming ability to communicate virtually nothing all while seemingly communicating something of value. While the language gives the illusion of aspirational, in reality it exposes the lack of focus and true direction. For example, consider the following vision statement: "We aspire to empower all our people to achieve their personal goals while delivering the greatest value proposition to our customers." What exactly is this communicating? What exact and/ or clear future is their vision communicating? Let's try this one: "We are committed to providing products and services which meet our customer expectations and our business objectives through a quality system, teamwork and continuous improvement." What are these products and or services? What does a customer or potential customer take away from this? For an example of a different kind of vision statement, let's look at Microsoft's: "Create experiences that combine the magic of software with power of Internet services across a world of devices." As clear as this vision statement is, it's still a departure from their previous vision statement, "A computer on every desktop." Which of the examples are clearer? Which one more directly speaks to what the company does and aspires to be? BY MOE GLENNER 8 IT MAGAZINE Vo l . 1 0 , N o . 2
