WOODWARD GOLF CLUB CELEBRATES 100 YEARS! Back to Mr. Woodward, who started it all: "Granddaddy used to like to sit on the porch at the (Woodward) club and watch the golfers playing golf, so they tell me," A.H. "Rick" Woodward III, one of nine grandchildren, told me some years ago. "He was also an avid golfer himself and really loved the place." Tim Witt, in his book "Bases Loaded With History," wrote "As summer turned into fall in 1950, Rick Woodward spent his time at the country club he had built in Woodward, silently watching the young golfers. "And, on Nov. 23, 1950, the first snowfall of the year fell on Birmingham. As an early winter settled on the city, high atop Red Mountain, Rick Woodward, a lover of the summer, died." Woodward was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame as their Distinguished Ameri- can Sportsman in 2010. In conclusion, as Frank McGowan of the Bir- mingham News wrote in 1960 in a piece titled "Pars, Birdies and Pig Iron": "And as the linksters battle par and each other and see the big furnaces going full blast they cannot help but remember the close tie-up between furnaces and course. "There is far more in common between the two than the mere name of Woodward…" Like many area clubs, Woodward Golf Club is ac- tively pursuing members and guests are welcome to visit and play. There have been some down times for this storied club, but a mixture of dedicated mem- bers and growing guest play have seen it persevere and actively look forward to its second 100 years.
