course subsequently expanded to 18 holes designed by Charlie Hall, who was the legendary head golf professional at the Country Club of Birmingham from 1911 to 1955. Mr. Woodward agreed to put up $2000 towards the construction of the clubhouse. Members came mostly from the four districts of Bessemer, Birmingham, Ensley and Woodward. The entrance fee (initiation) was raised in 1920 from $5 to $10. The new president was D.E. Wilson and the club grew to some 270 members. It was now well on its way. The Great Depression impacted the club, as it did many clubs, but it survived, under the guidance of Al DeMent. As Leonard concluded telling Van Hoose many years ago: "I think the club has been a wonderful thing for many people and it has certainly carried out Mr. Woodward's intentions of giving people who work indoors a chance for healthful recreation outside." What a fine testament to the game of golf, which is just as true today as it was many years ago. In addition to Hall's help with course design, additional work was completed by various club professionals down through the years at the club including Rollo Steinmehl, Danny Goss, Pete Grand- son, Charles F. "Whitey" Glazner and Paul Stapp. Further changes occurred to the course when, in the early 1970s, a new interstate (I-59) necessitated the clubhouse being moved to its present location and several holes where moved and/or rebuilt. Most of this work occurred in 1973 and was over- seen by the club's Board of Governors. In 1986 course designer Ward Northrup presided over a renovation of the course, which has hosted the Alabama Open multiple times and once had a storied invitational attracting top amateurs from across the state. Indeed, Alabama Sports Hall of Famer and four- time State Amateur champion Sam Perry won the City Open (precursor to the Alabama Open) in 1938 shooting 211, an average of just over 70 for each of his three rounds.
