TOP PRODUCERS • 29 by Jason Christopher Willett TOP PRODUCERS D omestic production data for crushed stone were derived by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from voluntary surveys of U.S. producers. In 2014, a total of 1,433 companies produced or sold crushed stone from 3,582 operations with 3,680 quarries and 372 sales and (or) distribution sites. A total of 1.37 billion short tons of crushed stone was produced for consumption from surface and underground mines, an increase of 5 percent from the total production in 2013, but 30 percent less than the record high of 1.96 billion short tons in 2006. The value of the crushed stone produced was $12.6 billion, an increase of 8 percent compared with that of 2013. The average unit value for crushed stone increased by 2.6 percent compared with the average unit value for 2013. After the relatively constant levels of the previous 4 years, production still remained lower than the level of crushed stone production for consumption in the United States in 1995. The total number of employees working at construc- tion aggregate mines has decreased every year since 2006. Employment was down by 20 percent compared with that in 2006 at mines identifi ed as producing crushed stone by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The 10 leading crushed stone producing states were, in descending order of tonnage, Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, and Virginia. The combined production of the 10 leading states increased by 6 percent to 718 million short tons in 2014 from 675 million short tons in 2013, accounting for 52 percent of the national total. The 25 leading companies, in descending order of crushed stone production in 2014, are listed on page 30. These companies, with 1,102 active operations that pro- duced rock from 975 quarries, accounted for 57 percent of the production of crushed stone in the United States. The combined production of the leading 287 companies was 1.21 billion short tons of crushed stone, which means that 20 percent of the companies produced 88 percent of the total sales in 2014.
