Lyve systems reduce biological (or biochemical) oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) levels to less than 50 parts per million in discharge water in as little as 24 hours, making them usable for vineyard or landscape irrigation, or other non-potable uses. Systems meet California requirements of the Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Napa Sanitation District. Lyve has developed six design models ranging in capacity from 2,000 gpd to 50,000 gpd. With these systems, the main aeration basins and clarification modules are fabricated in New Zealand using one-quarter-inch thick mild steel, and then shipped to the winery for installation. Systems larger than 50,000 gpd capacity are built onsite using con- crete to form the aeration basins. All system capacities are based on average BOD load of 6,000 ppm for the wastewater entering the system. Lyve systems are installed above ground on concrete slabs. These tanks can be placed in any configuration around the Lyve sys- tem, or below grade. Wastewater is initially pumped into an equalization tank that provides an even flow rate into the Lyve system and buffers the contaminant load to avoid BOD spikes. Equalization tank contents are continually mixed and pH adjust- ed as needed before the wastewa- ter enters the Lyve system. Lyve supplies positive displace- ment blowers with fine-bubble air diffusers for aeration, pumps for water transfer and mixing, equip- ment for pH adjustment and dis- solved oxygen analysis, and control systems. With a modular design, the sys- tems can be designed to a winery's individual capacity requirements. They can be designed and installed for new or existing wineries, either to replace or upgrade older waste- water systems, or to add capacity to existing systems. Lyve systems also make use of a winery's exist- ing wastewater infrastructure to make upgrades and expansions cost-effective.
