PENNSYLVANIA Geryville Materials Inc. has been trying for more than a decade to permit an operation near the village of Hosensack, but continues to deal with Lower Milford Township and its residents. Ac- cording to The Morning Call, the township has spent more than $1 million defending its ordi- nances in an attempt to block the quarry. An attorney for Geryville told the newspaper that the operator's application had dragged on so long because the planning commission previously re- jected a preliminary plan on illegal grounds. The attorney explained to a recently appointed com- mission member that the planning commission only decides if the operation's plan complies with township ordinances. The planning commission is expected to review the fi nal plan in December. At the same time, an attorney for the Lower Milford Residents Association wants the township plan- ning commission to reject a fi nal plan. NEW JERSEY TEXAS Tilcon New York began dust monitoring in response to public concerns, NorthJersey. com reports. Last year, a Quarry Committee was formed to better address concerns. The operation already monitors blasting and uploads quarterly reports onto the bor- ough's website. Dust reports will also be made available on the website for residents to view. The reports will not only show the amount of dust that is in the air but also atmospheric conditions such as wind speed and wind direction. Cemex's Balcones Quarry installed an advanced water recycling system that will signifi cantly reduce its dependence on the aquifer, the San Antonio Business Journal reports. Part of the plant's updated wash plant, the water recycling system cleans aggregate while using and recycling 12,000 gallons of water per minute. The system separates aggregate sand fi nes, which are reclaimed as a useable product. Company offi cials said it will save the equivalent of 2,000 Olympic-size pools annually. "We're proud of the updates our team has made at the Balcones Quarry and expect a positive impact on our sur- rounding communities," said Cemex USA Regional President Scott Ducoff.
