AGGREGATES MANAGER / May 2017 7 MINNESOTA Engineering students at Minnesota State University developed three reclamation op- tions for a nearly depleted 54-acre Manka- to quarry, Mankato Free Press reports. One option includes redevelopment as a vertical hydroponic growing system, another is as a fish farm, while a third would create the area's largest lake, which could also serve as a battery to story energy from wind and solar power. The designs are part of a senior Capstone project at the university, and some past Capstone projects have been implemented. OHIO Rocky Ridge Development LLC, owners of an Ottawa County quarry whose operations were shut down by a court order, has asked the Ohio Supreme Court to remove Common Pleas Judge Bruce Winters from the case. According to the Sandusky Register, the company said its opera- tions are legal and no threat to the environment. They filed a complaint to have the judge re- moved on grounds that the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has exclusive jurisdiction. The Ohio Supreme Court did not immediately remove the judge, but issued an order indicating that it will move on the issue quickly. In the meantime, the judge filed a brief arguing that he should be allowed to remain on the case and, if he made a mistake by issuing his preliminary injunction, it can be dealt with through an ordinary appeal. PENNSYLVANIA Naceville Materials, which has applied for a permit to expand its West Rockhill operations, opened its doors to area residents who wanted to get a closer look at the site, the News-Herald reports. The free tour, held in April, began with a continental breakfast and included a blast, along with seismographic readings of the event. TENNESSEE Tinsley Asphalt Inc. pulled its request to rezone property on Greenshaw Road from the Franklin County Commission's March 20 agenda. Accord- ing to the Herald Chronicle, the owner, Peter Tinsley, requested the item be removed from the agenda, but did so with an option to have it reconsidered at a later date. Neighbors of the site opposed the operation, saying it would harm their quality of life, property values, and area roads. Tinsley noted that the county would incur financial savings by having a local source of aggregates. WISCONSIN Hopkins Sand & Gravel, Inc. was featured in the Burnett County Sentinel as it marks 71 years of business. The company is operated by third generation siblings Julie Heinz and Rick Hopkins. It has six gravel pits and 50 employees, and has expanded into the con- crete business and residential services. "Our mission is providing quality products and services to meet customer needs," Heinz told the newspaper. PROVINCE NEWS Freymond Lumber Ltd. hosted a public information session for its proposed quarry in Faraday town- ship as part of the application process required by the Aggregate Resource Act. The company submit- ted applications to the township, county, and Min- istry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Members of the company's team spoke with Bancroft This Week to educate the local community about requirements regarding environmental impact, noise, traffic, and blasting limits.
