July 2017 | Overdrive | 15 AN APPEAL OF a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Pre-Em- ployment Screening Program reports it distributes to carriers was refused by the U.S. Supreme Court, handing a victory to DOT. The lawsuit was brought by six truck drivers and backed by the Owner-Operator Inde- pendent Drivers Association. CRETE CARRIER CORP. increased the maximum cruise control speed on its company trucks from 62 to 65 mph, citing "significant ad- vancements" in aerodynamics and safety technologies such as collision mitigation, roll stability and adaptive cruise control. A TRUCK DRIVER who claimed to have been shot while driving across Interstate 10 in Arizona on June 2 lat- er admitted to shooting himself in the leg while driving. State law enforce- ment officials had not released the name of the trucker at press time. A TRUCK DRIVER was arrested following a June 9 police chase that ended in a fiery crash and a two-hour standoff along Interstate 30. Jose Luis Cano Olivas, driving a tractor-trailer stolen from Arlington, Texas-based Pesado Transport, was fleeing police when he struck another vehicle and crashed into a retaining wall of an overpass. During the chase, as many as five vehicles were struck and 12 people injured, though none seriously. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS in California may have a tougher time obtaining a commercial driver's license. All new and existing CDL applicants and renewals now must provide proof of California residency, along with proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful per- manent residency or legal presence. AT LEAST EIGHT TRUCKS were damaged last month near Indianap- olis after rocks were thrown at them from Interstate 465 overpasses on the city's south side, cracking and shattering windshields and causing dents.
