VINEYARD systems can also receive federal tax credits for 30% of the qualified costs of the wind system, currently available through 2016. WINDY LONG ISLAND Long Island, N.Y., is known for its reliable winds, which provide a warming influence and a moderate maritime climate. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) began its Backyard Wind Initiative in 2009, an incentive program for grid-con- nected wind turbine systems that has helped six wineries finance installations. John Rocchetta is regional direc- tor for GreenLogic Energy based in Southampton, N.Y., a contrac- tor specializing in wind, solar and renewable energy systems. Green- Logic has helped four Long Island wineries install wind power sys- tems since 2009, and more winery projects are planned. GreenLogic assists with the entire process, including site evaluation, permitting and regulatory issues, financing and paperwork for grants and incen- tives, construction and startup, and monitoring and maintenance. Pindar Vineyards, at its North Fork winery and vineyard in South- old, installed the largest wind turbine of any Long Island win- ery, a 100 kW, 156-foot tall North- ern Power 100 manufactured by Northern Power Systems of Ver- mont. The turbine went online in December 2011 on a hill above the 43,000-square-foot winery, which produces 90,000 cases annually. "The North Fork of Long Island is an excellent place for wind power, and the location of the Pindar tur- bine is one of the best wind pro- duction sites that GreenLogic has identified," Rocchetta said. Pindar Vineyards co-owner Pin- dar Damianos said the engineer- ing and construction of the tower foundation was the most critical and time-consuming aspect of the Your Source for All Vineyard Trellis Supplies All Vineyard Repair Materials in Stock! The octagonal concrete pad is 17 feet in diameter, 8 feet deep and used 91 cubic yards of concrete. Erecting the tower and turbine on the pad took two weeks. The tur- bine's operation and power gen- eration can be monitored through the Internet by Pindar, GreenLogic and Northern Power, and provides alerts regarding maintenance and weather issues. The turbine is equipped with an automatic braking system to shut down the rotor and generator when wind speed reach- es 56 mph, and it has lightning protection. "This was the cleanest project we've had at our facility. It went up quickly and GreenLogic helped us with the paperwork for permits and for the incentives that financed over half the cost of the project," Damianos said. With a total cost of $500,000, the project received
