12. Use the soft face hammer to tap the ring gear differential housing in place on the new diff locker (L) and bolt them together again, tightening in a cross pattern. Use Locktite blue on the bolts. (N) (L) (O) 14. With a helper, put the ring-gear/new diff locker assembly back into position in the differential case (N) and turn the loose adjuster nut until it's snug and holding the assembly in place (O). 13. Put some grease on the inside of the roller bearing races, then press the bearings onto the diff locker with a bearing press. (M) (P) (M) 16. Once you are satisfied with the backlash measurement, reinstall the bearing caps and bearing cap clips (Q) and put the transmission back in park. 15. Reconfigure your dial caliper to measure the backlash on the marked spots on the ring gear. Adjust the torque on the adjuster nut until you have the same backlash as you started with in the same places on the marked teeth. (Remember: The truck must be in neutral to check the backlash.) (P) (R) 17. Put a bead of silicone around the diff cover mating surface, taking care not to get any silicone on the two holes that channel oil to the axles (R). Then reinstall the diff cover. (Q) 18. Tighten the diff cover bolts and refill the differential with the appropriate grade oil. Note that Eaton prefers you do not use synthetic oil; instead, use a petroleum- or mineral oil-based lube for this application. propickupmag.com PROPICKUP 49 PP0213_Diff locker.indd 49 1/11/13 10:24 AM
