DIFFLOCKERINSTALL 6. Set up your dial calipers to check the backlash on the main ring gear. (D) To do this, put the tip of the dial caliper on one tooth of the gear and then rock the gear by hand while observing how far the needle on the dial moves. (Note that the transmission must be in neutral to check the backlash.) Daniel checked at three equally spaced points on the gear and got measurements of .007, .007, and .008 – just about right. Using an indelible ink pen, he marked the location of the measurement and the amount of run out at those locations. (E) (D) (E) 8. Take out the bolt that holds the wire clip that secures the adjuster nuts and remove the clips on both sides. (G, H) (F) 7. Mark the carrier bearing caps (left and right) and then unbolt those. We used a metal stamp. (F) (G) (H) 9. Use a spanner wrench (I) to loosen the adjuster nut, but on one side only. The adjuster nuts are the only things holding the ring gear/diff lock assembly in place at this point, so make sure you have a helper holding the assembly in place. Otherwise, it may fall out of the case. If it falls on your foot, you will have to go to the hospital. (I) 10. Once the adjuster nut has backed off enough, the ring gear/diff lock assembly will slide out of the case. Again, use a clean rag and spray brake/parts cleaner throughout the inside of the differential case to clean it. Photo J shows the differential case with the assembly removed. The right hand adjuster nut is clearly visible at the edge of the case. (J) (K) 11. With the ring gear/diff lock assembly on the bench, unbolt the ring gear from the differential housing (K) and separate the two with a soft face hammer. Remove the tapered roller bearings.
