Attractions & Activities BISMARCK-MANDAN MEETING AND EVENT PLANNER'S GUIDE Our Heritage Let the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum set the stage for your reception, lunch or dinner events. The state's museum was designed by the Smithsonian Institute and houses one of the largest collections of Plains Indian artifacts in the world, along with galleries that bring North Dakota's rich history to life. Our incredible expanded facility, located on a beautiful setting on the North Dakota State Capitol grounds, allows you to explore the past, imagine the future, and enjoy the now. Bismarck - Historic City Circle Tour Tour the North Dakota State Capitol, the "skyscraper on the prairie," a 19-story building that was built in the 1930's. Next door visit the North Dakota Heritage Center, where you can explore Plains Indian history along with North Dakota's past with an extensive exhibit gallery. Include a visit to the former Governors' Mansion, a Victorian-style home built in the 1800's. See the historical Cathedral District with homes on the National Registry of Historic Places, and Camp Hancock, which was built to house railroad workers while constructing a bridge connecting east and west. Mandan - Where the West Begins Relive the military history of the 1800's at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. It was from this fort that the 7th Cavalry, under the leadership of General George Armstrong Custer, rode out on the ill-fated campaign at the Little Bighorn. Visit with Custer's staff as you explore his reconstructed home, the commissary, barracks and granary. Climb the steps to the Fort McKeen Post blockhouses where you will have a tremendous scenic view of the Missouri River valley. Enjoy the excitement as the infantry soldiers and 7th Cavalry relive history. See the On-A Slant Indian Village with reconstructed earthlodges, once home to the Mandan Indians. The Visitor's Center, loaded with military and Indian artifacts, has a 20-minute video that gives you an historic overview of the area. Prairie Knights Casino and Resort Come and experience this region's best in gaming and entertainment. Located on the scenic plains of the Standing Rock Reservation, you can enjoy the thrill of playing video slots. Other gaming is available to play such as craps, roulette and blackjack.
