Attractions & Activities BISMARCK-MANDAN MEETING AND EVENT PLANNER'S GUIDE Military Tour Military history is rich in and around Bismarck-Mandan. Tours can include the All Veterans Memorial on the ND State Capitol Grounds and Camp Hancock State Historic Site in south Bismarck. Then be sure to travel across the Liberty Memorial Bridge that carries the Memorial Highway over the Missouri River to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery and Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, just a few miles south of Mandan. Energy Tours: Wind - Coal - Gas The hub of North Dakota's energy belt is in Bismarck-Mandan. Basin Electric Power Cooperative headquarters in Bismarck and will explain an overall understanding of the types of energy generation plants you will see. These plants include: power plants, active mines, abandoned mines, oil refineries, oil rigs, and wind generation. Do you know where your energy comes from? North Dakota has the single largest deposit of lignite coal in the world, estimated at 25 billion tons of recoverable reserves. It is the home to Great Plains Synfuels, the only commercial-sized coal gasification plant in the United States, all located 75 miles from Bismarck-Mandan. Self Guided Tour of the Cathedral Area Historic District Enjoy a leisurely walk around these historical homes. The National Register of Historic Homes says, "An area of residence for many of the most prominent and influential figures of early twentieth century Bismarck, several of whose fame extended far beyond North Dakota's boundaries. The variety of architectural styles and overall remaining integrity of the buildings within the District provide the City of Bismarck with its most architecturally diverse concentration of residential structure."
