March 2020 World News From The World Of Fencing And Gate Automation When you say chain link, most people think chain link fence. Nothing wrong with that! But an architect and a fence contractor recently completed a project in Akron, Ohio that shows that chain link can be much more than a fence. The facility belongs to Galenas LLC, a researcher and producer of medical marijuana. Obviously the need for security is there. But the ar- chitect and the building owner want- ed something that would complement and even enhance the angular, modern exterior of the building. It was installed by Sentry Fence, Inc. of Akron, Ohio and designed by Urban Green Design architects of Co- lumbus, Ohio. It consists of two 20 foot tall, 1" mesh aluminized fabric chain link structures which are attached to the building and lean outward on one wall and inward on another at 13 de- gree angles. They are thus actually incorporat- ed into the building's exterior. The same mesh was also used for some standard fence around a parking lot. The project was entered in the 2019 Chain Link Fence Manufcturers Institute (CLFMI) Les Grube Memo- rial Design Award, and was recog- nized as winner. CLFMI presents the award each year to a project demonstrating the versatility and functionality of chain link products. In making the award, CLFMI rec- ognizes the designing architect and installing contractor of the project that is deemed to represent the most unique and practical way of incorpo- rating chain link fencing materials. The architect and contractor each re- ceive a specially-designed plaque and a cash award. The Galena sturcture was intend- ed for security, of course, but the client 2019 Les Grube Memorial Design Award winner Chain link provides security for Ohio medical marijuana facility in modern and imaginative way Top left, the 20 foot tall panels hug the north wall of the facility and help secure the area, as well as add a visually interesting aesthetic touch. A custom made gate allows access to the enclosed HVAC equipment. Top right, panels lean at a 13 degree angle away from, rather than toward, the south side of the structure. The building footprint, property line, and fence on the adjoining property had to be taken into consideration. The south side fence was only 8 feet from the prop- erty line at its anchor point at the bottom, but at the very top the fence was within an inch of the property line, below which was a fence with barbed wire along it.
